In the World Bank my role is to advise staff and management on their work with civil society, and specifically to encourage civic involvement in projects, research work and Country Assistance Strategies. More broadly, I am working on new forms of development co-operation which move away from attitudes of "donors" and "recipients", to partnerships based on relationships between equals - the only way to generate real legitimacy and local ownership, and therefore results. I describe how this new approach can work in my new Book "Future Positive: International Co-operation in the 21st Century", published in London by Earthscan. Copies can be purchased from info@earthscan.co.uk, or from online bookshops based in the UK such as Amazon.co.uk and Bookshop.co.uk.
I hope to apply the approaches laid out in "Future Positive" to the debate on Lome in a future posting on this web-site.
